Sporopollenin is a component of plant pollen grains and spores which has been described as ‘‘one of the most extraordinary resistant materials known in the organic world’’. Its structure is not well known. The purpose of this project was to quantify the number of double bond in sporopollenin by bromination.
The bromination of sporopollenin was carried out with liquid bromine in acetic acid stirred overnight. The loading of bromine on sporopollenin was determined using a gravimetric method and a mathematical deduction from C, H, and N elemental analysis.
